FRIENDS OF THE PAHRUMP COMMUNITY LIBRARY MINUTES OF October 4th, 2008
The
meeting was called to order by President Ed Sepulveda at 9:15 A.M. at
the Pahrump Community Library Meeting Room. The Pledge of
Allegiance was voiced by all. A welcome was extended to local resident
Natalie, and our speaker, Rob Mobley.
Joan
Bangor moved, Ellie Leemans seconded, that the Minutes of the September
6th meeting be accepted as presented. Motion passed unanimously.
In
the absence of treasurer Marie Long, Chairman Ed reported an
opening balance of $5,245.91 and a closing balance of $5,089.46.
Expenses: $305.00 to Susan Wonderly for the children’s summer reading
prizes; $38,00 speaker Gail Martin’s book; $89.95, for a pricing
gun. Income: Book Store, $276.50. Phyllis Alvis moved, Mary
Ward seconded, acceptance of the Report. The motion passed
unanimously.
Librarian’s
Report: Vivian Owen reported statistics showing the tremendous
increase in patronage of the Library this past year. She remarked
that the reference library could use an additional atlas-rack, and will
present specifics to Chairman Ed in the near future.
Library
Board Report: Ed Sepulveda informed the Library Board of the
decision of the Friends to work with a book-broker – a growing national
pattern -- to sell some of the materials donated to the Friends.
The Board found this acceptable. A new billing procedure by
Utilities Inc is increasing Library expenses significantly. The
Board is challenging this increase. Also increasing is the cost
of Workman’s Compensation Insurance.
Committee Reports:
Events
and Friends Book Store: Phyllis Alvis reported that sales have
slowed somewhat after a very active summer -- $!,300, June, July, and
August. Phylllis recognized, and members applauded, all the
volunteers who work in the Book Store.
Membership–Connie VanMalkenhorst, announced a new business partner, Roxanne Blum at Funding Solutions.
Speakers—
V.P. Edward reported that John Salacan, John Salacan Studio and White
Raven Press, will return to give a more thorough presentation of the
history of books. Edward introduced Natalie Kline, from the Amargosa
Conservancy, an FOL business sponsor. Ms. Kline introduced a fund
raiser for the Conservancy – the recycling of printer cartridges.
A special box for the printer cartridges will be at the Library
desk. Ms. Kline talked about the Conservancy activities:
scheduled tours (brochure) , eradication of noxious salt cedar trees,
and new acquisitions in partnership with the Nature Conservancy.

page.
Announcements: **Friends of the Library canvas Book Bags, available at the circulation desk, for $10.
**FOL Big Book Sale – scheduled for January 30-31, 2009. Set up, Jan. 29.

**The December 6th FOL meeting will be a Holiday Pot Luck, by popular choice.

Mary read two thank-you notes. Brenda Gibbons, Youth Librarian,
thanked FOL for funding the incentive rewards for the Children’s
Summer Reading Program. Susan Wonderly, Director, thanked FOL for
the gift of Book Bags to the Library staff.

SPEAKER:
At 10:15, VP Edward Underhill introduced Rob Mobley, a Nevada
historian. Mr. Mobley works at the Nye County Museum, and teaches
Nevada History at local colleges. Mr. Mobley focused his very
interesting presentation on the history and the environmental impact of
mining the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, Nevada.

friend), and Nate Jenson.
The Minutes of the June 7th
meeting were accepted as presented.
Treasurer Marie Long reported a
June opening balance of $4,818.84 and a closing balance of $5245.91. Expenses: $355.65 to Susan
Wonderly for the children’s summer reading prizes; $40, speaker Judi Moreo’s
book; $498.13 to Southwest
SpecialDees, for 100 book bags. Income: Book Store, $1,320.85.
Kay Hendricks moved, Joan Lewis
seconded, acceptance of the Report. The motion passed unanimously. Chairman Ed announced that the June
audit found no errors.
Recognizing the significant
summer income from the Book Store, Ed commended Phyllis Alvis (absent) for her
dedication in supervising Book Store sales, and thanked members for volunteering
in the Store. Sixty cartons of book
are in storage.
Librarian’s Report: Susan Wonderly reported: 1) Adult Fall
programs will begin in October;
2) Because the children’s Summer
bi-lingual reading program was so well received, the library will continue the
program; and 3) 61 children, who participated in the Summer Reading
Program, qualified for $5.00
Scholastic Book vouchers for a total of $305.00, to be reimbursed (with thanks)
by the Friends of the Library. (See
Minutes of May 3, 2008)
Committee Reports:
Membership– In the absence
of Connie VanMalkenhorst, Chairman Ed announced a total of 83 individual/patron
memberships, and 20 business sponsorships at this time.
Hospitality—Kay Hendricks
counts on FOL members to let her know when we need to send a card from the
Friends. Call Kay: 727-0562. We recently sent a “Bon Voyage” to
long-time member Alysemae Schultz when she left Pahrump to live in Simi Valley, California.
Announcements:
**Sturdy book bags, beautifully
hand-screened by Southwest SpecialDees, are now
available, thanks to the efforts of
Kay Hendricks and Ed Sepulveda.
Though the members had approved an order for 200 (June minutes), the
committee took the license of ordering only 100. Additional bags can be ordered at any
time, with no shipping fee. Kay
credited SpeialDees for providing an exceptional product at a very reasonable
cost.

handsome bag at the Circulation Desk, or at the next Friends’ meeting for
$10.
**Nevada State Friends of the
Library: Ron Hughes, Henderson, informed
Chairman Ed that By-laws have been prepared to establish a state
association.
**Tri-fold Update: Ed will update the information, and take
it to the printer. Kay offered to
distribute new folders to the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center. Ed will ask member Donna LaDuke to offer
folders to local realtors to distribute to their clients.
New
Business:
Ed introduced guest Nate Jenson,
owner of Spinner Fall Books, to propose a partnership to help sell some of our
used books. Many of the books in
our store, especially specialty or technical books, will sell better on-line
than to our local buyers. (Example:
Nate bought nine books from our store, then sold them for $300 on the internet.)
Nate offered to broker selected books/records through his business, splitting
the profits 50/50 with FOL.
After considerable discussion of
details, Kay Hendricks moved, Margaret Long seconded, that the Friends of the Library agree to work with
Spinner Fall Books (Nate Jenson) to broker select materials that have been
donated to the Friends. Kay and
Margaret agreed to an amendment, adding: for 50% of the profit. The motion passed unanimously. We will inform the library board of this
proposal and assure them that it will not involve any library materials. Nate Jenson will offer a written
agreement in October.

SPEAKER: Multi-award-winning author Gail Martin, writer of romance and romantic
suspense for Christian readers, gave a most interesting presentation, focusing
on the journey that led her to writing, rather than on any of her 40 published
novels. Ms. Martin became a recognized author only after she retired from her
earlier profession. Become

The
meeting was called to order by President Ed Sepulveda at 9:15 A.M. at
the Pahrump Community Library Meeting Room. The Pledge of
Allegiance was voiced by all. A welcome was extended to guests Jack and
Jan Rider, and our speaker, Judy Moreo, and her assistant.

Treasurers Report Treasurer
Marie Long reported a May opening balance of $4,593.43 and a
closing balance of. $5202.43. Expenses: $13.98, meeting
refreshments; $20, speaker Geoff Schumacher's book; $309.61, Biz Expo;
$40, Friends USA dues. Income: Book Store, $201; Member dues,
$40; Bus. Dues $85; Expo sales, $33; Chamber, refund of Biz Expo
fee & deposit, $250.00. Kay Hendricks moved, Donna LaDuke
seconded, acceptance of the Report. The motion passed
unanimously.
Librarian's Report: Librarian's
Report: Susan Wonderly reported a change in the awards for the
summer reading program. Substituting for tickets to the Mini Grand
Prix, $5.00 cash vouchers for the Scholastic Book Fair (July 28 through
August 8) will be given to each participant who attends three of the
six "Catch the Reading Bug" sessions. Judy Novotny moved, Joan
Lewis seconded, that the Friends of the Library cover the cost of the
vouchers in addition to the two top awards. The motion passed
unanimously. At this time, Susan has spent $345 on the two top
awards-- tickets for a family of four for each of the three age
groups--for the Shark Reef and the Adventure Dome.
Library Board Report: Library
Board Report: Bob Alvis reporting. Howard Tokerud and Ron Eason
have been re-appointed to the Library Board for another four-year term.
Committee Reports:
Events
and Friends Book Store--Phyllis Alvis reported that FOL received a
large donation of used books, many of which are classic science fiction
in excellent condition. With so many books on hand, Phyllis moved, Kay
Hendricks seconded, that we buy ad space in the Pahrump Valley Times to
advertise the items available in the Book Store. Motion passed
unanimously. Mary, secretary, will prepare the ad. Phyllis
commented that two local used-book salesmen purchase books at our store
on a regular basis.
Historian, Joan Bangora, is on deck with the recent FOL items in the local papers.
Membership Membership-
Connie VanMalkenhorst announced a total of 81 members plus
fifteen business sponsorships at this time. She asked that the
new members, at today's meeting, pick up their membership badges.
Connie suggested that we consider starting a Junior Friends of the
Library group next Fall - a way to bring younger members into our
association..
Unfinished Business: **Book-bags
to be sold at the circulation desk-a durable, canvas bag with straps
supporting the expandable bottom has been selected. We have
placed an original order for 200 bags from "SpecialDee's" in Pahrump. .
.no shipping charges. Kay Hendricks will work with SpecialDee's
on the Logo and information to be printed on the bags. **
Discussion: Kay Hendricks remarked that many of the people she
spoke with at the BizExpo did not know where the Library is
located. Donna Lee LaDuke offered to prepare a list of local
highlights in Pahrump, including the Library. She will get this
information to the 222 realtors in town and suggest that they tour
these highlights when working with new home buyers. Donna will
also inquire about placing the Pahrump Community Library on the
Locator-Map, published by the Pahrump Valley Times. Donna pointed
out that Walgreens has an unused sign-board on 372 that might possibly
advertise the location of the Library. **
Bob Alvis complimented Susan on her success in advertising children's
activities at the Library. He suggested that additional focus be
placed on adult opportunities, such as the Readers Club, Shakespeare
Quorum, and Adult Family Movies.
New Business: **Election
of Officers for the 2008-2009 FOL Board: The Ballot, mailed to each
member, included. President: Ed Sepulveda, Donna
LaDuke; Vice-President: Edward Underhill; Secretary: Mary
Costello, Suzi Schoonover; Treasurer: Marie Long, Kay Hendricks. At
9:30, the election committee was excused to count the 56 ballots that
were received. Phyllis Alvis announced the outcome: all the
present board members were re-elected. A word of appreciation is
extended to those re-elected as well as to all who agreed to run for
office.

Auditing Committee: Following the meeting, VP Edward Underhill,
Margaret Long, and Joan Lewis met with Treasurer Marie Long to audit
the 2007=2008 accounts.
Announcements: ** President Ed prepared a schedule of meetings for the coming year. Copies are available. **
Before closing the meeting, Ed thanked all the committee members, and
the ballot nominees for the contributions they have made this past
year. He invited everyone to stay for Judy Moreo's presentation,
and then enjoy a delicious pot luck, and comradery.
On a motion by Mary, seconded by Edward, the business meeting was adjourned at 9:55 AM.

meeting was called to order by President Ed Sepulveda at 9:15 A.M. at
the Pahrump Community Library Meeting Room. The Pledge of
Allegiance was voiced by all. A welcome was extended to guest Donna
LaDuke. The chair was turned over to Vice President Edward
Underhill who introduced our speaker. (Summary below)
The business meeting continued at 10:35, following a fascinating presentation by Geoff Schumacher, and refreshments.
The Minutes of the April 5th meeting were accepted as presented.
Treasurers Report In
the absence of Treasurer Marie Long, Ed reported an April opening
balance of $4,170.31 and a closing balance of $4,593.43. Expenses:
$55.88, mailing costs; $82, three books to raffle off at the Business
Expo. Income: Book Store, $260; Member dues, $80; Business
sponsors, $215; and Valley Electric (tips), $6.00. Phyllis Alvis
moved, Joan Lewis seconded, acceptance of the Report. The motion passed
unanimously. FOL can expect a refund of the $150 pre-paid
for the Business Expo booth; we won a FREE BOOTH at the
April 30th Chamber Mixer!
Librarian's Report: Susan
Wonderly reporting. A six-week children's summer reading program,
"Catch the Reading Bug," is scheduled for three age levels. To
encourage attendance, at each age level Susan will award a set of
four tickets (family) for three Las Vegas events: Shark Reef, Adventure
Dome, and the Mini Grand Prix. Joan Lewes moved, Cindy Sepulveda
seconded, that the Friends of the Library provide Susan with a check
for $650 to pay for the awards. The motion passed
unanimously. Secretary Mary Costello will prepare an article for
the Pahrump Valley Times with information about this joint effort to
make the summer program a success.
Susan shared the news that, on May 1st, the library was used as a
location for the filming of a commercial movie- 7:30 PM to 3:00 AM. The
movie will premiere in October at the Pahrump Nugget.
Library Board Report: Bob
Alvis reporting. At the April meeting, Susan Wonderly was given
an "excellent" job-rating. The Board has scheduled a public
Budget Hearing, for Thursday, May 15th, 10:00 AM.
Committee Reports: Events
and Friends Book Store--Phyllis Alvis reported that sales are going
well, new books are shelved each week, and the 10-cent barrels are
filled with romances. FOL will mail more books to the Washington
State Mariners.
Membership Connie
VanMalkenhorst announced a total of 77 members plus sixteen
business sponsorships at this time. She encouraged volunteers to
push membership at the Expo booth.
Program/Speakers: VP
Edward Underwood reviewed the speakers scheduled for future meetings.
(See April minutes.) At the next meeting, June 7th, we look forward to
hearing author Judy Moreo, followed by our year-end Pot-Luck.

User Group suggests that we work with them to produce mouse-pads having
both Computer User & FOL information on them.
New Business: **Nominations
for the 2008-2009 Board: As per the By Laws, Frank Leemans,
chairman of the Nominations Committee, announced the roster of
electees, and called for additional volunteers.. New officers will be
elected at the June meeting. The Ballot, to be mailed to each member by
May 14th, is as follows. President: Ed Sepulveda, Donna
LaDuke; Vice-President: Edward Underhill; Secretary: Mary
Costello, Suzi Schoonover; Treasurer: Marie Long, Kay Hendricks. FOL members are encouraged to vote, and return their ballot by mail, or in person on June 7th. The
Committee, Frank & Ellie Leemans and Phyllis Alvis, will count the
votes and announce the outcome at the end of the June 7th regular
meeting.

SPEAKER: Geoff Schumacher, Las Vegas author, presented his fascinating new book: Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia, and Palace Intrigue.
Based on hours of interviews with the people who knew and worked with
Howard Hughes, Mr Schumacher brings to the reader new information and
insight into the life of this eccentric legend. Coming to Las
Vegas in 1966, the rich and talented Howard Hughes uniquely energized
the legitimate growth of Las Vegas.

who had come to hear Ron Wayne's presentation.

Underhill moved, Joan Lewis seconded the approval of the March 1st,
2008 Minutes. The motion passed unanimously.

Long, Treasurer, reported a March opening balance of $3,524.70, and a
closing balance of $4,170.31. Expenses: $177.89, stamps; $250.00,
Chamber-Biz Expo; $20.00, Keith Froehling books.
Income:
Book Store, $293.50; Member dues, $255; Business sponsors, $280; and
Valley Electric (Dist. 1 Meeting), $275.00. Kay Hendricks moved, Edward

Librarian’s Report
Susan
Wonderly reported. The highlight of her month was attendance at the
National American Library Association Conference in Minneapolis MN.
Many good ideas were presented, especially the use of Nintendo's "Wii"
computer games to teach math skills, literacy, organization of ideas,
and socialization to children. Since the ALA schedule was so
packed, it would be advantageous to send two representatives next
year. After the annual budget is prepared for the Library
Board,
Susan will work on a request to FOL for computer game equipment.

Alvis reported. The April 14th agenda will include the budget
for
the coming year, and an update of the paving of the easement in front
of the Library.

and volunteers to help on a scheduled basis with book sales and room
organization.

VanMalkenhorst announced that FOL has four new members, and twelve
business sponsorships, with more expected. She reported that
the
Amargosa Conservancy leadership, Brian Brown and Tami Tripp, plan to
join FOL, and would like to address the membership at a regular
meeting. The Pahrump Genealogical Society is also interested
in
working with the Friends of the Library.

meeting.

a focus on simplicity of navigation, WebMaster Dennis Suter is
designing our site-www.pahrumpfol.com. Requesting input,
Dennis
suggested that the site include FOL minutes, library news, business

Expo:
May
2-4, 2008: Phyllis Alvis passed the Volunteer Sign-Up
sheet. Phyllis will supervise the May 2nd booth-set-up at the
Pahrump Nugget. Thanks, Phyllis.
New
Business:

per the By Laws, a Nomination Committee was appointed. Frank
Leemans and Phyllis Alvis volunteered to serve. New officers will be
elected at the June meeting. (Note: ByLaws V #4, should read
June elections, not December - a typo.)

Chairman Ed appointed an Auditing Committee: VP Edward Underhill
representing the Board, along with volunteers Margaret Long and Joan
Lewis.

Ed received a letter from the Mission to Seafarers Organization,
thanking us for the box of paper-backs we sent. Located in
the
Everett, WA area, the Mission offers a free library to seafarers,
providing recreational reading and an opportunity for language
improvement.

Billie Polkosnik invited all to participate in a new program,
Shakespeare Made Simple, at the Pahrump Community Library on Tuesday
evenings, beginning April 8, 5-7 p.m..

by Phyllis, second by Edward, the business meeting was adjourned

informative lecture: The Economy under the Influence of Corrupted
Money. Inflation is a secret tax, caused by the Federal
Reserve
practice of printing limitless paper money that has no collateral.
