FRIENDS OF THE PAHRUMP COMMUNITY LIBRARY

MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 6, 2010

OFFICERS: Ed Sepulveda, Pres., Edward Underhill, V.P., Marie Long , Treas.,
Helene Campton Recording Sec., and Mary Costello,  Corresponding Sec.

The meeting was called to order by President Ed Sepulveda at 9:25 AM at the Pahrump Community Library meeting room.  Fourteen members were in attendance; Ed Underhill was absent.  The Pledge of Allegiance was voiced by all.

The minutes of the January 9, 2009 meeting were approved as read.

Treasurers Report: Marie Long reported an opening balance of $4565.08, and a closing balance of $4,165.59.  There was a total of $114.00 deposited; $55.00 for membership and $59.00 in book sales.  Expenses: $11.69 to Marilyn Christensen, $9.87 to Mary Costello, $324.76 to Southwest Specialdees, $17.22 to Ed Sepulveda, and $150.00 to Valley Signs for a total of $513.49.

Librarian’s Report: Susan Wonderly reported that the library is extremely busy and that consolidation of the meeting rooms is necessary to accommodate all the groups that want to use them, plus the yoga for kids has displaced groups also.  Susan also reported that the library is looking into purchasing a small table, possibly at Wal-Mart (possibly something for the wish list).  Dan McArthur said that the library should budget 10% less spending this year and that the library may need to look to the FOL for financial help this year.  Checkouts have been very strong due to the bad economy.  People are relying more on the library for their entertainment and information needs.  The new book baskets are working well and Ed Sepulveda purchased plaques that adhere to the baskets which state the FOL purchased this item for the library. (Bigger plaques were also purchased for future use on larger items as well) There was a discussion on how people could access the library’s website to find audio books.  Right now there is no specific data base just for that category.  A person must search by author or title and then see if it’s offered as an audio selection.  Maybe Mandy can look into this when updating software.

Library Board Report: Bob Alvis is no longer on the board.

Committee Reports:

Friends book store: Phyllis Alvis reported that money has been missing from the cash box 3 weeks in a row.  Susan also reported that money has been missing as well.  Phyllis also reported she called all the volunteers and she lost one, but gained one.  She has some opening: Tuesdays from noon to 4pm and Thursdays from 9am-11:30am or after 2pm to closing.  There were donations of 5 boxes of books.  Someone donated books and Phyllis realized that personal family bibles were included so she is holding onto them.

Historian: There was nothing to report.

Hospitality: Nothing was reported at this time.

Membership: Connie is no longer membership chair.  No volunteer has come forward to fill in.

Programs/Speakers: Ed Underhill is still recuperating from surgery.  Our speaker for February is Brian K. Shoemake.  Ed U. will work on speakers for March, April, and May.

Website: Dennis Suter will report back how many hits the website gets this month.

Announcements:  The National Friends of Libraries Week is October 18-24, 2010.
The next Friends of the Library meeting will be at 9:15AM, March 6, 2010.

Unfinished business: Ed Sepulveda handed out the new chamber maps with our advertising in it to each member who came today.  The chamber gave us 25 maps for free because FOL bought an ad.  These maps will be good for the next 2 years, and will cost $2.50 to the general public.
FOL paid Southwest Specialdees $324.76 for book bags.  We will sell them for $10.00 a piece and we gave Susan 20 to sell in the library.
Refreshments for March will be Susan Wonderly and Joan Lewis for April.

New Business: Mary Costello put together a survey based on what the board discussed at their last meeting.  It will be sent out by email, mail, and put on the webpage.  Member input will be extremely important, and it can be sent back anonymously.  Meeting attendance has been down so this may help us understand why.
Ed S. reported that the FOL will be having their book sale at the Pahrump Nugget Casino. They have graciously donated one of their event rooms to us. Set up will be Thursday March 25th  after 1:00pm.  The sale will be March 26th and 27th; times to be 9:00am- 5:00pm and 9:00am-3:00pm respectively.  Clean-up will be immediately afterwards on the 27th because another group needs the room at 5:00pm.  There will be no buck-a-bag this time as the books being offered at this sale are in almost new condition.  Phyllis will schedule volunteers, and will contact Donna LaDuke who is in charge of advertising.

The Pahrump Valley Time donated a case of books.  There are 300 books titled: Screw Nevada, A Cartoon Chronicle of the Yucca Mountain Controversy.  Members were encouraged to take a copy.

A motion was passed to participate in the Chamber of Commerce’s Biz Expo.  Set-up will be Thursday, April 22nd from noon to 6:00pm and Friday, April 23rd from 9:00am- 11:45am.  It will be open to the public Friday 23rd from noon to 7:00pm and Saturday 24th from 9:00am to 5:00pm .  Break down will be Saturday 24th after 5pm and /or Sunday 25th 9:00am to 4:00pm.  The cost for a non- profit organization is $150.00 for a 6’X 8’ table.  There will be a $100.00 refundable deposit.

Wish List: In the ALTAFF magazine Ed S. found an article for Books for Babies kits.  He thought Brenda may be interested in this for the children’s reading program.

Adjournment:  At 10:20AM.

Minutes respectfully submitted,
Helene Campton
